The Premier League team of the season so far

The Premier League team of the season so far

Given the current situation, it feels like the perfect time to look at the standout performers in the Premier League this term and discuss the team of the season so far.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, nobody is quite sure when the Premier League will resume. But these players definitely deserve a spot in the best EPL XI of 2019/20.

• Dean Henderson – Sheffield United

The 23-year-old Manchester United loanee has been immense between the sticks this term, and it’s fair to say that he has completely outshone David de Gea at his parent club. With 10 clean sheets to his name, Henderson is second on the Golden Glove leaderboard, while Sheff Utd boast the second-best defensive record in the division.

• Trent Alexander-Arnold – Liverpool

At just 21, Trent Alexander-Arnold has firmly established himself as the most complete right-back in world football. With nine games remaining this season, he has already matched his own Premier League record for the most assists by a defender in a single campaign. Only Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne has more this term, and that speaks volumes about Alexander-Arnold's ability.

• Caglar Soyuncu – Leicester City

Replacing the world’s most expensive defender was never going to be easy. But following Harry Maguire’s mega-money move to Man Utd last summer, Caglar Soyuncu has risen to the challenge and arguably outshone his predecessor. Leicester’s form may have dipped since the turn of the year, but Soyuncu has remained one of the league’s best defenders throughout the campaign.

• Virgil van Dijk – Liverpool

The giant Dutchman has featured in every Premier League game for Liverpool this season and has guided the Reds to 12 clean sheets along the way. Virgil van Dijk cemented his status as the best center-back in the game by narrowly missing out on the Ballon d’Or in November. But finishing second to Lionel Messi is certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

• Kevin De Bruyne – Manchester City

Kevin De Bruyne has arguably been the best player in the Premier League this season. And when you consider that Liverpool is 25 points clear at the top of the table, that’s a pretty bold statement to make. However, the magical Belgian has registered an astonishing 17 assists in 26 league appearances this season, as well as contributing eight goals for Pep Guardiola’s side.

• Jordan Henderson – Liverpool

The Liverpool captain has been nothing short of immense this season, and supporters of other Premier League clubs are now starting give Jordan Handerson the credit he deserves. The former Sunderland man was once considered out of his depth at Anfield, but he has silenced his doubters to become one of the best central midfielders of his generation.

• Jack Grealish – Aston Villa

It’s been a difficult campaign for Dean Smith’s men, but Grealish has been a constant bright spot in an otherwise bleak season for Villa. The club captain has singlehandedly kept his team afloat on countless occasions this term, while his record of eight goals and seven assists is a remarkable return for a player at a bottom-three side.

• Adama Traore – Wolverhampton Wanderers

The powerful winger is built like an NFL player, but he has the speed of an Olympic sprinter. Traore has been unplayable for much of the season, and he has now added an end product to his game. With six goals and ten assists to his name in 2019/20, Traore has become one of the most dangerous wingers in England’s top flight.

• Jamie Vardy – Leicester City

Like a fine wine, Jamie Vardy is getting better with age. The Leicester striker is currently sitting at the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts, so it’s only right that he has a spot in the team of the season so far. An eight-game goalscoring streak earlier in the campaign is a stark reminder of what the lethal striker is capable of.

• Danny Ings – Southampton

Ings started the season slowly – scoring just once across the opening six games – and Southampton looked set to be involved in a relegation battle. But Saints’ number nine netted 13 goals in the next 16 games, propelling his team out of the bottom three and into the top half of the table. What Ings has done for a struggling Southampton side this season cannot be overlooked.

• Sadio Mane – Liverpool

The Senegal forward has become a hero at Anfield, and his performances throughout the current campaign have been of the highest order. He may have scored fewer goals than teammate Salah in 2019/20, but Mane’s overall game is on another level. The speedy forward has notched up 14 goals and nine assists in the Premier League this season.
