Premier League Team of the Decade
2452
As we reach the end of the decade, it is customary for football websites and publications to produce their teams of the decade. That's certainly the case in the English Premier League and many leading sports websites and newspapers have been publishing their Premier League team of the decade.
That's led to great debate among football fans but which players deserve their place in this team?A vote on the BBC Sport website produced the following team for the last decade in the Premier League.
David de Gea
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Vincent Kompany
Virgil van Dijk
Patrice Evra
Steven Gerrard
N'Golo Kante
Kevin de Bruyne
Sergio Aguero
Harry Kane
Eden Hazard
There is certainly nothing wrong with this team and it would likely beat most on its day. However, there are some surprising inclusions, beginning in the defence. Trent Alexander-Arnold has been selected at right-back and there is no doubting the quality of the Liverpool player. Operating from the full-back position, Alexander-Arnold has not only helped his club to plenty of clean sheets since establishing himself in the team but has also provided a great deal of quality in attack.
The main issue with including Alexander-Arnold in the team is that he has only been playing for a very short time, especially in comparison to Kyle Walker. The Manchester City right-back started playing in the Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur in 2011 and earned a move to the current Premier League champions in 2017. Walker has won the Premier League twice, has been named PFA Young Player of the Year once and selected in the PFA Team of the Year three times. On this basis, Walker should be in the Premier League team of the decade.
Remaining in defence and we come to the inclusion of another Liverpool player, Virgil van Dijk. Again, there is very little doubting his stature as currently the best central defender in the world but does he deserve his place in the Premier League team of the decade?
John Terry played in the Premier League for Chelsea up until 2017. Between 2010 and 2017, the former England international defender won the Premier League three times (including the 2009/10 season) and was named in the PFA Team of the Year.
Moving into midfield and it is surprising to find there is no place in the team for David Silva. The Spaniard has played in the Premier League for Manchester City for the whole decade and has been a major catalyst for their success. He has helped the club greatly in winning four Premier League titles and has been named in the PFA Team of the Year twice.
It is also impossible to ignore the potential inclusion of Silva’s former team-mate, Yaya Touré. The midfielder played for Manchester City between 2010 and 2018, winning the Premier League three times and twice being named in the PFA Team of the Year.
These are just some of the players who could have been included in the Premier League team of the decade but who do you think deserves a place in team?
