Chelsea started their Premier League campaign in a good fashion under club legend Frank Lampard. The former England midfielder replaced the outgoing Maurizio Sarri as Blues boss.
The decision was seen as a no-lose situation for the club from south west London, who were banned from making any transfers last summer.
Lampard and his young team made a bright start to their campaign in the English top-flight. In fact, they played that well that they established themselves in the top-four early in the campaign.
The likes of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic all shone at various points in the early stages of the campaign.
However, the Blues recent form has dipped alarming, as a 1-0 home defeat against Bournemouth last time out means that Lampard’s team have now lost four of their last five league matches. The fixtures looked kind to the Blues too, so defeats against teams currently dwelling in the bottom half of the table were highly disappointing.
The defeats have left Lampard’s team just three points clear of fifth-place Tottenham, who have hit form since the appointment of former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho. The Blues will now be looking nervously over their shoulders at their London rivals.
Lampard has done pretty well to keep his young team within the Premier League’s top-four this season without fresh additions. However, this poor run of form will test his managerial ability and tell us a lot if Lampard will be a long-term managerial solution for the Blues.
As a club legend, he will no doubt get more time to get things right, despite Chelsea under Roman Abramovich’s ruthless reputation. However, Lampard needs to turn things around and quickly.
The fact that the Blues can now dip into the transfer market may well just help the former Derby boss to get his team’s season back on track.
