On Saturday afternoon, Everton produced a battling display to beat Chelsea 3-1 at Goodison Park. The temporary appointment of club icon Duncan Ferguson as the team’s boss got the grand old stadium rocking.

The crowd produced an atmosphere that has not often been seen at Goodison Park in recent years, mainly due to tepid displays under previous bosses.

The Toffees headed into the game with Chelsea in the bottom three of the Premier League table. However, the players produced an old-fashioned battling performance that showed that there is still spirit left in a group of players who under previous boss Marco Silva seemed to lack quality and fight.

The Everton players have been underperforming all season under the stewardship of Silva.

On paper, Everton do not have a bottom three team. In fact, they were expected by many at the beginning of the campaign to challenge for a place in the Premier League’s top-six this season.

The appointment of Ferguson, even on a temporary basis has given everybody at the Merseyside club a lift. The victory over Chelsea has changed the atmosphere at the club and has led to fans looking forward to the games, instead of dreading them as was the case with some matches under his predecessor.

How long Ferguson’s temporary tenure will last is currently unknown, as the club’s hierarchy only appointed the Scot while they found a permanent replacement for Silva. The victory in his opening game was certainly a good start if he wants the job on a permanent basis.

However, it seems the man himself is aware that he is not quite ready to manage the team on a permanent basis just yet, although it is an ambition for the future.

What Ferguson’s appointment has done is buy the club’s hierarchy some time to bring in the right boss to move the team forward, which is vital in their current situation.
