With the 2020 European Championship qualifying groups coming to an end this week, we will know many of the teams who will be taking part in the tournament next summer. A total of 24 nations will participate in the competition and ahead of the Nations League play offs, we will know 20 of the teams.

Usually, the European Championship is played in one or two countries at most but to mark the 60th anniversary of the tournament, the games will be spread across 12 cities. This means for some teams and players; they will be playing their matches at a home venue which has to be seen as an advantage.

The question is, which player will come out on top in terms of goal scoring at the 2020 European Championship?

A look back at the 2016 European Championship, which was won by Portugal in France, shows what playing at home can do for a striker as Antoine Griezmann finished the top goal scorer with 6 goals. The closest players to the Frenchman only managed to score 3 goals and Griezmann must be considered a leading contender for top goalscorer again at the 2020 European Championship.

However, other nations will be playing their group games at home including England. Harry Kane finished the qualifying campaign with 12 goals to his name and must be considered one of the favourites to finish the 2020 European Championship as top goalscorer. All 3 of England's group games will be played at Wembley and this is a big advantage for Kane, which he will be eager to use to score goals.

Netherlands, Italy, Russia, Spain and Germany will also be playing their group games in their own country. Interestingly, only one of these nations has a player who came close to being the top goalscorer in qualifying and that's Artem Dzyuba of Russia.

The Zenit Saint Petersburg Striker scored 3 goals at the 2018 World Cup which was held in Russia and Dzyuba will be hoping to score the goals to propel Russia into the latter stages of the 2020 European Championship.

When discussing the potential top goalscorer of a tournament, it is impossible to ignore Cristiano Ronaldo. The Juventus forward finished as joint second top goalscorer at both the 2016 European Championship and 2018 World Cup. Portugal come into the 2020 European Championship as defending champions and if they were to go all the way once more, Ronaldo is sure to be among the goals.

Other names which cannot be ignored include Robert Lewandowski of Poland, Romelu Lukaku of Belgium and Memphis Depay of Netherlands, all of whom enjoyed a strong qualifying campaign. In terms of potential outsiders to finish as top goalscorer at the 2020 European Championship, Teemu Pukki of Finland, Marko Arnautović of Austria, Serge Gnabry of Germany, Cenk Tosun of Turkey and Andrea Belotti of Italy are all interesting bets having performed well in the qualifying games.
