Can Liverpool challenge City without new signings?

Liverpool continued their pre-season preparations on Thursday night by recording a 6-0 win over Merseyside rivals Tranmere. The likes of Rhian Brewster and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain featured for the Reds.

Liverpool Jurgen Klopp revealed after the game that he felt that the pair were like new signings, after being asked about new signings this summer. The Reds have not added any senior players to their squad.

The Merseysider’s only signing so far this summer is Dutch youngster Sepp van den Berg, while another young player Harvey Elliott is also expected to join from Fulham. The 16-year-old is the youngest player to ever feature in the Premier League.

Both players are ones for the future. However, despite links to many senior players, Klopp side has yet to add to their squad options for the new campaign.

Of course, the Reds enjoyed a stellar campaign last season, finishing just a point behind champions Manchester City and winning the Champions League. However, despite the stellar campaign, some have doubts that Liverpool can reproduce the same consistency as last season when they suffered just one defeat.

The Reds have no obvious weaknesses in the team, although some have expressed concern about the lack of creativity in the centre of midfield.

Title rivals’ champions Manchester City have already brought in highly-rated Spanish midfielder Rodri and are reportedly looking to bring in a new centre-back. The Citizens are likely to strengthen further before the new season kicks off.

The champions will be determined to avoid some of the slip-ups of last season and hold off the challenge of Klopp’s team.

Liverpool no doubt have a very good starting eleven. However, maybe they lack a bit of quality cover in certain areas. It seems doubtful that the Reds will head into the season without a senior signing.

Klopp will know what areas of his squad need improving. However, the German has also stated that this summers window will not be a big one for the men from Merseyside, who once again look to push City close for the title.
