The race for the Premier League title keeps rolling on, as the leagues top-two Liverpool and Manchester City recorded victories over the weekend. There still remains just one point between leaders City and the challengers.

Liverpool recorded a comfortable 5-0 home win over already-relegated Huddersfield on Friday night. However, Pep Guardiola’s side found tougher opposition in north west rivals Burnley and recorded a 1-0 victory courtesy of a solitary Sergio Aguero strike.

A trip to Turf Moor was always going to be a tough one, as the Clarets were four games unbeaten, having recorded three wins. Sean Dyche’s sides good run of form had sealed their top-flight status for next season.

Despite their top-flight status secured, the Clarets made it difficult for City at Turf Moor. The Citizens struggled to break down the resilient home side, who forced the visitors into misplacing passes by their pressing and their usual physical style of play.

Eventually, City found a breakthrough, though, as Aguero scored from close-range. The goalline technology system confirmed that the Argentinian’s effort had indeed crossed the line, in spite of the best efforts of Clarets full-back Matt Lowton.

The victory was not pretty, but it was a victory of champions. Sometimes teams need to grind out wins, even if the Citizens did not have to last season when they were all-conquering in the Premier League.

With just two league games remaining of the season, it is still too close to call. Both City and Liverpool could win their remaining league matches, which would mean the reigning champions would retain the title.

City look to have a slight advantage in both points and their remaining games. The Citizens host Leicester before visiting Brighton on the last day of the season. Liverpool meanwhile visit Newcastle before a home match against Wolves at Anfield.

While many were talking about the trip to Old Trafford being the Citizens biggest obstacle to the title a few weeks ago, the victory at Turf Moor may prove to be just as pivotal a moment for City in the title race as their win over Manchester United.
