It's good to have a title race in the Bundesliga
1949
Many of the top European leagues have been pretty standard this season when it comes to who wins the respective titles. As usual, PSG have clinched the Ligue One title early, with Juventus also already crowned champions in Italy.
Those triumphs have come as no surprise, which is why it is good to see Dortmund giving perennial Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich a run for their money in the German top-flight.
Bayern are just a point above their title rivals with four rounds of the Bundesliga remaining. In truth, it is amazing that the reigning German champions are back at the summit of the table considering the start BVB made to their Bundesliga campaign.
Dortmund looked set to run away with the title in Lucien Favre’s debut campaign as boss. Bayern boss Niko Kovac struggled for results early on.
However, as has happened on a regular basis in recent seasons, the Bavarians mounted a formidable run of form to return to the top of the table, including hammering Dortmund 5-0 at the Allianz Arena.
The result looks like it could be key to Bayern retaining the title. However, there is still time for Dortmund to leapfrog the Bavarians, although BVB arguably seem to have the harder remaining fixtures of the two teams.
With a slight lead over their rivals, Bayern Munich will be confident of landing their seventh straight German title.
Dortmund are the last team other than the Bavarians to win the league back in 2012. Favre’s team will still be hoping to end Bayern’s dominance of the Bundesliga in the next few weeks.
The current situation can only be good for the league, as a title race potentially going to the wire helps to keep fans interested until the end of the season. A genuine title race is sure to keep Bundesliga fans enthralled until the end of the campaign.
