Manchester City headed into their home game with Chelsea on Sunday expecting a tough afternoon. However, it turned out to be far more comfortable than anybody expected as the Citizens hammered the Blues 6-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Sergio Aguero bagged a second consecutive hat-trick in Premier League games, while Raheem Sterling scored a brace and Ilkay Gundogan got on the scoresheet.

As bad as Chelsea were, and they were poor, City were just brilliant in attack. There were signs of the dominant Citizens team of last season in their defeat of the Londoners, as the perceived complacency of some games of late was nowhere to be seen at the Etihad Stadium.

The victory was an ominous sign that Manchester City means business and it put the Blues back to the top of the Premier League table, albeit that closest rivals Liverpool still have a game in-hand on Pep Guardiola’s team.

The fact that the Citizens swatted away one of the contenders for a top-four place so easily shows that they will not lose their top-flight crown without a fight.

Everybody connected with City know that they can afford very few slip-ups in the season run-in with Liverpool still very much in the race. The advantage has been very much with rivals Liverpool in the last few months, as the Merseysiders have been in top form.

However, the next round of fixtures after the break for the FA Cup could see the advantage return to the reigning champions. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool visit City’s rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford in gameweek 27.

The Red Devils are in good form under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and need the points to maintain their position in the top-four of the Premier League. A defeat in Manchester would very much return the advantage to City, especially as the Citizens goal difference is superior to the Merseysiders.

Manchester City have the mental strength to finish the campaign in a strong fashion and it would take a brave man to back against them winning the title after Sunday’s result.
