Premier League race could be all but over on Wednesday night

Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat at relegation-threatened Newcastle on Wednesday night.
The Citizens had the chance to cut the gap between themselves and league leaders Liverpool to just a point. However, despite taking the lead in the first minute at St James Park, two second-half goals, including a late penalty from Matt Ritchie, were enough to sink Pep Guardiola’s side.
Liverpool host Leicester on Wednesday night and on current form it looks very likely that they will extend their lead to seven points at the top.
The Reds have looked relentless this season and have won ten of their last 11 top-flight outings. It would be highly surprising if Jurgen Klopp’s team slipped up against the Foxes at Anfield.
The Newcastle defeat has been part of a worrying trend for City since Christmas, as they have also lost to the likes of Leicester and Crystal Palace. Maybe a spot of complacency has set in at the champions.
City boss Pep Guardiola is a man who demands high standards. The Catalan boss will be furious that his team managed to let this golden opportunity and possibly with it the title slip through their fingers.
No other team is close enough to Liverpool to challenge the Merseysiders for the Premier League title. The Reds have waited nearly three decades to win the English league title and this season may well see the end of their long wait for glory.
They have slipped up in good positions in the past in the title race. However, the current team seems to have more steel and more character about them. They also seem to have both the quality and the hunger to get over the finish line this time around.
There is of course still plenty of the league campaign still left. However, a seven-point lead at this stage of the league looks an almost unassailable lead due to Liverpool’s aforementioned relentless form.
