Last season Dortmund started their Bundesliga campaign off in stellar fashion. BVB topped the table in the early months of the season, only for their form to dip, which resulted in them only claiming a Champions League spot by the narrowest of margins.

Dortmund have started the current Bundesliga campaign off in a similar fashion. Lucien Favre’s side head into this evening’s home game against second-place Monchengladbach six points clear of the visitors and reigning champions Bayern Munich.

It was all looking positive for the league leaders until a shock 2-1 defeat at Fortuna Dusseldorf last time out ended their unbeaten start to their league campaign.

The result at Dusseldorf was the sort that saw BVB’s decline last season. Everybody associated with the club will be looking to avoid another such collapse this season.

Friday’s game against Monchengladbach could be one of the biggest of Dortmund’s campaign. A win will restore the positive momentum, while a defeat could see both the Foals and Bayern Munich head into the winter break just three points behind BVB.

Bayern Munich made a sluggish start to last season and roared back to run away with the Bundesliga title. This season the Bavarians have made a similarly sluggish start to their campaign in the German top-flight.

However, in recent weeks the reigning champions are starting to show the signs of recovery. A 1-0 win over RB Leipzig in midweek means that Bayern have now won four straight matches in the German top-flight.

Dortmund look to have the right players and boss in charge in Lucien Favre to go all the way this season and end Bayern’s recent dominance of the Bundesliga. However, they need to learn from their mistakes from last season and make sure they do not let the lead slip once again.
