When people think about Liverpool, they think of the attacking, high pace football that boss Jurgen Klopp likes his team to play. Maybe they think of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino or even Sadio Mane’s attacking talents.

However, the Reds have struggled defensively under the German boss, until the last 18 months that is. This season the Merseysiders defensive resolute has improved, and one of the main reasons is the presence of Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson in-between the sticks.

On Tuesday night, Liverpool recorded a 1-0 victory over Napoli to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League. Liverpool’s star forward Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the match, but it was a stoppage-time save by goalkeeper Alisson that proved to be crucial.

The Brazilian goalkeeper produced a brilliant save from Arkadiusz Milik to keep Liverpool ahead and sent the Reds through to the last 16 of the Champions League.  Without the save, Klopp’s team would have been playing in the Europa League in the New Year.

When Liverpool spent £67million to sign the Brazilian international from Roma there were many eyebrows raised. However, already Alisson is looking like one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Alisson had only really enjoyed one full season at Roma prior to his move to Merseyside. However, that one season with the Giallorossi showed his potential to become a top-class goalkeeper.

In the last few seasons, Liverpool have had goalkeepers who make people nervous in the likes of Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius. However, Alisson exudes confidence and it helps the players in front of him.

While the goals of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino may win games, Alisson’s saves could help the Reds win that elusive Premier League title, which is what the Reds have craved for so long.
