Luiz could be the key to Antonio Conte’s Chelsea tactics

Brazilian defender David Luiz’s return to Chelsea from PSG for a reported fee of £30million on deadline day was certainly a surprise deal. The 29-year-old has re-joined the Blues just two seasons after moving to the French capital.

The signing could be the key to Chelsea’s Italian boss moving to a back three, with Luiz offering an addition option to current first choice pair Gary Cahill and John Terry. Luiz is more dynamic than the English pair and offers a very different skill-set.

Luiz likes to make marauding runs out of defence and take part in attacks, which playing as part of a centre-back pairing can leave a team vulnerable. However, if Luiz played in centre-back three, he would be free to take the ball out of defence with the other defenders and defensive midfielder N’Golo Kante to cover for any absences.

Conte used the 3-5-2 successfully at club level with Juventus and more recently with the Italian national team as well. Prior to Luiz’s arrival, the Blues were short of centre-back options, as Conte has been looking to recruit a new centre-back all summer.

Maybe the Italian can now switch to his preferred formation. The switch would also allow Conte to be able to field both Diego Costa and lively Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi up front. The latter has already impressed as a substitute for the Blues but is unlikely to start games instead of Costa.

Antonio Conte has made a bright start to his tenure as Chelsea boss, but maybe we have not seen the best of the Blues under the Italian and a switch of formation could just improve the team’s performance even further.
