European football is ramping up now in 2022 and with the Champions League over the horizon, many of the top five leagues are beginning to take shape. Here’s the best games to watch this weekend.
Borussia Dortmund - SC Freiburg
It’s been a strange few months for Borussia Dortmund who have dropped into the Europa League and saw a distance of six points created on leaders, Bayern Munich.
They also fell 2-0 down to Eintracht Frankfurt last time out, but three goals in the final 20 minutes stunningly snatched all three points for BVB in the end.
Freiburg are also still giving their Champions League fight a serious go and sit fourth right now, six behind second-placed Dortmund.
The two clash this Friday evening.
Manchester City - Chelsea
Back when Manchester City beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the Blues were top of the table and it seemed as if they and Liverpool would be the main two sides to watch this campaign.
In the 22 games since that win over Chelsea, Pep Guardiola’s men have only lost once in 90 minutes; a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
It puts the champions top of the Premier League by 10 points over Thomas Tuchel’s second-placed men, and anything but a win here all but ruins Chelsea’s hopes of a title and only fuels City’s more.
Tottenham - Arsenal
The north London derby is one of the most anticipated fixtures on the English calendar and with Arsenal in fourth on 35 points and Tottenham Hotspur down in sixth two points behind that with a game in hand, this one is now about as important as it's been in recent times.
Arsenal’s dreams of returning to the Champions League will take an almighty hit if they don’t win here, while Spurs’ will get a serious push. Moreover, there’s usually always goals here and it should be an early 2022 cracker.
Atalanta - Inter
Inter Milan have started to create a gap between them and the rest of Serie A and since the draw in the Milan derby, the club have gone on to score 22 goals in seven games and concede only a stunning record of three goals.
The recent suspension to the Bologna game has brought AC Milan back within a point, however, and Atalanta remain just eight points behind and can reignite their title quest with a win here.
Olympique de Marseille - Lille OSC
Ligue 1 is a one-horse race again this season as Lille have all but lost their title to PSG already as they sit 10th in the table and even a great distance from the third-placed Marseille as they sit eight points behind.
Marseille are still within a shout of a title race, with PSG still dropping points here and there, but it does remain seriously unlikely.
Now, it’s all on them keeping up their Champions League spot and heaping more misery on a seriously underperforming Lille side.
