Are Liverpool’s title chances over despite incredible record?

It is time to crown Manchester City the Premier League winners. The holiday period has laid a devasting blow to Liverpool’s once thriving title challenge – and that of Chelsea’s, too.

Liverpool’s 1-0 loss to Leicester City on Tuesday night was unexpected. It was the first time in 28 matches this season the Reds failed to score a single goal.

While it is easy to assume Liverpool lost to Leicester City courtesy of poor defending, the result was due to a poor attack and missed chances. Liverpool should have led early through Mohamed Salah, yet the winger’s penalty was saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

Sadio Mane had Liverpool’s best chance of the second half, skying a shot over the crossbar that should have been buried into the back of the net. Liverpool’s 1-0 loss to Leicester City was reminiscent of the team’s God-awful form shown post-Christmas in 2020-21.

Many onlookers assume the team’s defensive injuries were the reason for such poor form at that time. Yet, looking back at all of the games in which Liverpool failed to score, the real reason for the terrible form was a lack of scoring from the front three.

Salah has not scored in his last two matches and after Sunday’s game against Chelsea, will be off to the AFCON. Mane is on a terrible goalscoring drought. The winger has gone seven matches without scoring and hasn’t looked like tickling the nylon recently.

Liverpool’s loss to Leicester City and Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Brighton on Wednesdays now has Jurgen Klopp’s team in third place. Just before Christmas, Liverpool were in the title race. Now, it looks more likely the Reds will be in a fight to stay in the top four.

As any fan of Liverpool will tell you, it isn’t the losses that kill a title fight, it is the draws. The Reds have drawn more games than either Manchester City or Chelsea. The Reds have drawn six of their 19 matches this season.

A loss or draw to Chelsea on Sunday coupled with a Manchester City win against Arsenal – and the Cityzens should win – and Liverpool will be officially out of the running for the Premier League title again this season.

Sure, the Reds must still play Manchester City a second time. Yet, Liverpool must also play Tottenham, Manchester United, and Arsenal once again. Three teams that continue to improve. Yes, Manchester City must play those teams as well.

Manchester City have shown far more league consistency than Liverpool despite lacking a front three with the capabilities of Mane, Salah, and Diogo Jota.

Liverpool’s title hope ended at the King Power Stadium. The Reds must now turn their attention to the three cup tournaments they can still win along with finishing in the Premier League’s top four.
