Euro 2016 Golden Boot contenders: Thomas Muller

Euro 2016 Golden Boot contenders: Thomas Muller

Germany and Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller has made a career of scoring important goals and is an ace predator in the penalty area. The 26-year-old has scored five times in each of the last World Cup finals and was third top-scorer in qualifying.

Muller has managed to be prolific for Die Mannschaft despite playing much of his international football as an attacking midfielder. The Bayern star has made 70 appearances for country and has netted an impressive 31 times.

The attacking midfielder plays in the position now re-defined by popular football simulation Football Manager as ‘Raumdeuter’, which is a position that translates as ‘space investigator’ or ‘space interpreter’.

Muller does not seem to fit into any category of player, hence the title ‘Raumdeuter’. He is not particularly quick, nor does he have particularly great technical ability, but he has exceptional football intelligence.

It is his football intelligence and his ability to be in the right place at the right time that has made him such a valuable asset at club and international level. The fact that Muller won the Golden Boot at World Cup 2010 illustrates his individual importance to his national side.

Germany heads to France for the European Championships with a slight lack of attacking options with Mario Gomez and Lukas Podolski the only other attacking options for Joachim Low’s team.

Muller is likely to be the German’s main attacking threat and may even spend some of the tournament in a more central role, which could mean even more chances for the elusive forward.

Thomas Muller will always be a threat to opposition defences, in his own enigmatic style and the Bayern star cannot be written-off as a contender to win this summer’s Golden Boot.
