Louis van Gaal underachieved at Manchester United

According to recent reports, Manchester United have sacked veteran Dutch boss Louis van Gaal ahead of the imminent appointment of Portuguese boss Jose Mourinho.

The former-Ajax boss won the FA Cup on Saturday, but the triumph over Crystal Palace was enough to keep him in his job, as United failed to make the Champions League spots this season.

Van Gaal’s style of play was heavily criticised by fans and media alike. The rather dull style of play may have been acceptable if the Red Devils were challenging for the title or even the Champions League spots.

The veteran boss favours bringing through younger players and attempted to do that at United with a degree of success. Considering the amount of money he spent in his four transfer windows at the club the Red Devils should be achieving far more in the English top-flight.

Van Gaal inherited a poor squad from previous bosses, but United fans would be expecting to challenge for the title by now under the Dutchman.

The Dutchman guided United back into the Champions League spots in his first season. However despite a late challenge for a top four spot missed out on the top four in his second campaign.

Van Gaal has been defiant about his position as United boss, despite claims that Jose Mourinho is set to take his job at Old Trafford. It now seems the Dutchman’s defiance was just for show, as his exit was always likely with Mourinho’s availability always tempting the Red Devils into a change.

Mourinho’s agent is now expected to hold talks this week and it now seems like a formality that the Portuguese will be the new United boss.
