Barcelona still the favourites for La Liga title

The Spanish title race is now down to two teams, after Atletico Madrid suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat at relegated Levante on Sunday afternoon. Barcelona hammered city-rivals Espanyol 5-0 at the Nou Camp, while Atletico’s city rivals Real Madrid defeated Valencia 3-2 at the Bernabeu.

This weekend means that Barcelona remain the favourites to win La Liga this season. Luis Enrique side visit Granada next weekend in their game of the campaign and rivals Real Madrid face a trip to Deportivo.

Reigning champions Barcelona will kick-off next weekend a point ahead of Real Madrid and Atletico are only three points behind the league leaders, but the Catalan giants have a superior head-to-head record to Atletico, which means that Diego Simeone’s team cannot win the title.

Barcelona had looked to be easing to the title a couple of months ago, but surprisingly suffered three consecutive La Liga defeats. The defeat meant that both in-form Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid have made the title race slightly more entertaining.

Reigning champions Barcelona also have a superior head-to-head record against Real Madrid and a win for Luis Enrique’s side will give the Catalan giants a consecutive Spanish title.

However, if the Catalan giants slip-up then the men from Madrid could capitalise to win their first title since 2012. Zinedine Zidane’s team probably would not have believed that they would have been this position a few months ago.

However, anything could happen on the final weekend of La Liga, as Atletico’s defeat at relegated Levante recently proved. Anything but a Barcelona win at Granada seems unlikely though and the reigning champions look set for a 25th Spanish top-flight title.
