Despite his outstanding scoring record and impressive trophy haul, it’s probably fair to say that Edin Dzeko has never been viewed as a world-class striker.

Although the veteran Bosnian has scored goals and won titles all across Europe, his name rarely pops up when it comes to discussing the greatest strikers of his generation.

Yet, at the ripe old age of 35, he has hit the ground running at Inter Milan and is still finding the back of the net at a rapid rate.

Having already scored five goals in six Serie A appearances for last season’s scudetto winners, it could be argued that Dzeko deserved far more praise than he gets.

In order to grasp just how good Dzeko has been throughout his career, we need to start from the very beginning.

After making a name for himself in his homeland at FK Zeljeznicar Sarajevo, Dzeko secured a move to Czech side FK Teplice in 2005.

During a two-year spell in the Czech Republic, he scored 16 goals in 45 outings across all competitions – underlining his potential.

In 2007, he was snapped up by Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg. He netted 85 goals in 142 games during his four-year stay in Germany, contributing 35 assists in the process.

The Bosnian enjoyed a remarkable 2008/09 campaign with the Wolves, bagging a phenomenal 36 goals and 12 assists en route to lifting the Bundesliga trophy.

He then got his big move in 2011, joining Manchester City. He won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one EFL Cup during his five-year stay at the Etihad Stadium.

In terms of his personal numbers, Dzeko notched 72 goals and 39 assists in 189 matches across all competitions for Man City.

In 2016, he swapped England for Italy – teaming up with AS Roma. During the next six seasons, he chalked up an astonishing 119 goals and 55 assists in 260 appearances for the Giallorossi.

A few months after his 35th birthday, Dzeko joined Serie A champions Inter on a free transfer – and he hasn’t stopped scoring since.

After registering a goal and an assist on his debut for Inter, he netted a double against Bologna before scoring in back-to-back games against Fiorentina and Atalanta.

Even in the twilight of his career, the prolific marksman is still finding the back of the net at a frightening rate.

It is also worth remembering that Dzeko is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s all-time leading scorer by some distance, having bagged 60 goals in 116 outings for his country.

Considering Dzeko has played in the same era as so many world-class strikers, it is easy to overlook his achievements.

Yet, as the 35-year-old continues to defy age at Inter, it’s about time he starts getting the recognition that his record deserves.
