PSG looking to reclaim the French title

The French top-flight campaign kicks off this weekend, with Lille looking to retain their crown. Meanwhile former champions PSG will be hoping they can reclaim the title from LOSC after last season’s surprising title race result.

Lille winning the French title last season was a surprise, as PSG usually cruise to the French title. It was an admirable achievement.

It could be hard for the reigning champions to repeat the feature after several big exits this summer.

The most influential exit is that of head coach Christophe Galtier who has joined Nice. His replacement is former Guingamp boss Jocelyn Gourvennec.

They have also lost key players such as Mike Maignan and Boubakary Soumare. They have yet to significantly strengthen their squad either.

However, if last season is anything to go by, it would be a mistake to write off Lille. LOSC have already beaten PSG 1-0 in the French Super Cup.

While PSG’s main objective seems to be winning the Champions League, the club from the French capital will also be hoping to reclaim the Ligue One title this season.

The big-spending giants have been busy strengthening their squad with the arrivals of Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos, Achraf Hakimi and Georginio Wijnaldum. Only Hakimi cost a fee.

With the new signings PSG have made, they should be a force to be reckoned with at home and abroad. The quartet has certainly added quality and experience to the squad.

Another team that deserves a mention is Gautier’s new club Nice. They have brought in Mario Lemina, Pablo Rosario, Justin Kluivert and Calvin Stengs.

They have also made Jean-Clair Todibo’s move from Barcelona a permanent one. They could just be a threat to the top teams this season.

While PSG will kick-off the campaign as favourites to win the French top-flight title, as Lille showed last season, Ligue One is no longer a one-horse race.
