Euro 2020 experience bodes well for England’s chances at World Cup 2022

Euro 2020 experience bodes well for England’s chances at World Cup 2022

England may have lost the Euro 2020 final on penalties to Italy on Sunday night, but their run to the final bodes well for future tournaments, including next years World Cup in Qatar.

Gareth Southgate’s squad did considerable well to make the final considering that it was an inexperienced squad of players compared to many of their opponents.

The good thing is that youngsters like Phil Foden, Mason Mount, Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and even Jude Bellingham have now experienced an international tournament and that experience could be vital next time around.

With less than 18 months until the big event, the majority of the current Three Lions squad are likely to still be around. Players come and go from international squads, but the core should remain, as most of the squad are in their twenties or even teens in the case of Saka and Bellingham.

No doubt there will be other players looking to force their way into the squad too, as the likes of Mason Greenwood and Trend Alexander-Arnold both missed Euro 2020 through injury.

England have a very talented group of players available to Southgate. Whether they can make a big impact at another major international tournament will be decided on how they are managed.

Next year’s World Cup in the heat of Qatar is likely to be an even tougher challenge for the Three Lions. However, as they have shown at the European Championships, they do not shirk challenges and could be amongst the favourites, if the head coach gets it right.

England is proud of their young team and some of those players are only going to get better with more experience both in the club and international game.

Who knows maybe 2022 will be the year that England ends their long wait for a second piece of international silverware?
