Jose Mourinho has a tough job on his hands at Roma
2271
On Wednesday, Jose Mourinho held his first press conference as head coach of Roma. In true Mourinho style, he stopped mid-conversation to tear off a loose strip of wall covering.
Whether he can tear off a strip of his new players to gain that long-awaited success in Rome is another matter.
The 58-year-old head coach is one of the best tacticians of his generation. However, his career has been on a downward spiral in recent years.
The former Manchester United head coach flopped at Tottenham, as the team from north London arguably went backwards rather than forwards under his stewardship.
He will claim he has nothing to prove in the Italian capital, but many will say that is far from the truth. The game has moved on and Mourinho maybe hasn’t.
That is the nature of the game, though, time stops for no man. Very few head coaches are successful for the majority of their careers.
His arrival at Roma is certainly a Hollywood-style appointment by the club's US owners. Mourinho’s presence at the club will certainly raise the profile of the Giallorossi.
However, can he make the difference on the pitch for a team that looks in need of inspiration?
They have finished outside the Champions League spots in the last three seasons after previously finishing in the top three under the likes of Rudi Garcia and Luciano Spalletti.
In reality, the team needs a lot of work to compete at the top of Serie A and whether Mourinho can be successful may well depend on how much money the club’s hierarchy are willing to spend.
It would be cynical to say that Jose Mourinho’s is in the Italian capital just to pick up another big paycheque and live in one of the most aesthetic cities in the world.
The Roma job is a tough one and we soon discover if there is any of that old Mourinho magic left.
