Manchester United scored three goals in 10 second-half minutes to overcome League Two outfit Colchester United – setting up a Carabao Cup semi-final clash with fierce rivals Manchester City.

The five-time EFL Cup winners spurned plenty of opportunities in a disappointing first-half. However, Marcus Rashford opened the scoring on 51 minutes with a fantastic solo goal.

Colchester’s Ryan Jackson then turned Mason Greenwood’s cross into his own net, before Rashford set up Anthony Martial for the home side’s third.

It’s fair to say the visitors came to defend. The fourth-tier team inevitably sat back in the opening stages of the game and frustrated Man Utd.

Despite battling to keep Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s men at bay, Man Utd always looked like scoring. And when the deadlock was broken early in the second-half, it was one-way traffic for the rest of the game.

Colchester can be proud of their efforts in this year’s EFL Cup. The underdogs had beaten Crystal Palace and Tottenham to reach the last eight.

Still, Man Utd’s superiority ultimately prevailed. The League Two side can leave the competition with their heads held high, while Man Utd must now prepare for a double-header with Man City.

The stats suggest the home side should’ve scored more, but they wasted a number of good opportunities. Colchester goalkeeper Dean Gerken also made a couple of impressive saves.

As expected, the possession was completely dominated by Man Utd. The fourth-tier outfit struggled to compete with Man Utd’s quick passing and devastating pace going forward.

Man of the Match: Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)

The England forward remained a constant threat to the Colchester defence throughout the game. He opened the scoring, and also notched up an assist for his side’s third.

Rashford has now scored 17 goals for club and country this season, while his tally of 14 for the Red Devils is his best return for the club in a single season.
