Championship 2019: The Year in Numbers

Championship 2019: The Year in Numbers
2906

The Championship is widely regarded as one of the most competitive leagues in world football. While many of the country’s most famous clubs battled it out for a place in the Premier League, some of the division’s top players shone in 2019.

So, let’s take a look back at the best performers in the Championship over the course of the calendar year.

Most Goals (27)

Jarrod Bowen – Hull City

Jarrod Bowen’s outstanding breakthrough year has led to him being linked with numerous Premier League clubs in the January transfer window.

Hull’s talisman scored 27 league goals in 2019, and with just under half of the campaign still to play, he has already netted 16 this season.

The 23-year-old is currently two goals behind Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic in the Championship goalscoring charts, but Bowen’s six assists see him top the goal involvements leaderboard.

If Bowen can maintain his dazzling form, he will surely be on course to feature in a second consecutive EFL Team of the Season.

Most Assists (15)

Barry Bannan – Sheffield Wednesday

The Owls’ midfielder registered an impressive 15 assists in the Championship in 2019, confirming his status as one of the league’s most productive players.

Sheffield Wednesday finished 12th last season. But this time around, Bannan will be hoping to go one better and help his side gain promotion.

Bannan’s seven assists this term have guided Wednesday to 8th in the table, two points outside the play-off places.

If the Owls continue to climb up the table, expect Bannan to notch up more assists as the season progresses.

Most Clean Sheets (18)

Kiko Casilla – Leeds United

It’s no surprise that Kiko Casilla finished 2019 with more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in the Championship.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa builds his team on a solid defence, meaning only Brentford have conceded fewer goals than Leeds in the second-tier this term.

Casilla has already made 12 shutouts in 25 appearances this season – giving him a clean sheet record of 48%.

The former Real Madrid man looks set to guide Leeds back to the top-flight, ending the club’s 16-year absence from the Premier League.

Most Minutes (4350)

Sam Johnstone – West Bromwich Albion

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone played every second of every Championship game for West Brom in 2019.

The Baggies narrowly missed out on a return to the top-flight last season, but West Brom are currently in a fantastic position – nine-points clear of third-place Brentford.

Johnstone is again playing a pivotal role in this season’s promotion push for West Brom, so he could be facing his former club Manchester United in the not too distant future.

Most Matchwinners (7)

Britt Assombalonga – Middlesbrough

Britt Assombalonga scored more match-winning goals than any other Championship player in 2019.

The Middlesbrough striker netted 14 league goals last season, so Asssombalonga’s match-winning goals amount to 50% of his overall tally in 2018/19.

Unfortunately, Middlesbrough have endured a below par campaign up to this point, and Asssombalonga has only managed to find the back of the net six times this season.
