Will Palmer Make the Cut for European Championship Favourites

Will Palmer Make the Cut for European Championship Favourites

With the major European club season over, attention is turning to the 2024 European Championship. England are the favourites with the bookmakers to win the competition and there is stiff competition for places in the squad.

One man who will be hoping to book his place on the plane is Cole Palmer. Could the Chelsea man prove to be a key ingredient in Gareth Southgate’s team?

Palmer has made only two appearances for England and ordinarily, a player who has played so little for his country would not be expected to feature in a major tournament.

However, such has been the rise of Palmer with Chelsea this season, the attacking midfielder could easily finish the European Championship as one of the players of the tournament.

Palmer has come a long way in the last 12 months having been an unused substitute in the Champions League final for Manchester City against Inter Milan on the 10th of June 2023. Palmer made a total of 41 appearances for Manchester City and he completed 90 minutes only twice in the 2022/23 Premier League season for the champions.

Palmer appeared 14 times for Manchester City in the successful 2022/23 Premier League season and made just 1 assist. However, that did not deter Chelsea and they signed Palmer for a reported initial fee of £40 million, which now seems like incredible value.

If we fast forward to the end of the 2023/24 Premier League season and it was one to remember for the 22 year old. Palmer made 34 appearances in the Premier League for Chelsea, scoring 22 goals, and recording 11 assists.

That means, on average, there was only 1 match in which Palmer did not have a goal involvement in the league for Chelsea. It is worth remembering when looking at the stats that Chelsea underperformed for most of the 2023/24 Premier League season and that makes Palmer’s statistics even more impressive.

If we look at the five major leagues in Europe, Palmer recorded more goals and assists than any other player who started the season 21 years old or younger.

Only Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah recorded more shots per game than Palmer, who averaged 3.3 shots per game in the 2023/24 Premier League. Palmer was also in the top 10 for key passes in the Premier League last season, registering an average of 2.2 key passes per match.

However, there is a lot of competition to get in the England team for the 2024 European Championship. Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon, James Maddison, and Jarrod Bowen are all competing for a place in attacking midfield, both centrally and from a wide position.

Palmer can play anywhere across the front line but with Bellingham also in the mix, it is going to be tough to get into the starting XI.

Foden and Saka are likely to start the first match in the 2024 European Championship but should they struggle or pick up an injury, England have a player who could come into the team and have a massive impact.
