2021/22 Premier League Preview – Brighton & Hove Albion

2021/22 Premier League Preview – Brighton & Hove Albion
1835

Brighton played an exciting brand of football without getting the results last season. Can they turn good performances into wins in 2021/22?

• Manager: Graham Potter

• Stadium: Amex Stadium

• Last Season: 16th

The south coast side are preparing for their fifth consecutive season in England’s top division, having gained promotion back in 2017.

Graham Potter has been at the club since 2019 and has transformed the Seagulls into a Premier League mainstay. Now, it’s time for them to move up the table.

• What Happened Last Season?

Despite finishing eleventh on the xG (expected goals) leaderboard last season, Brighton ended up just two places above the relegation zone after struggling to take their chances.

The Seagulls were the third-lowest scorers in the league last term, although they boasted the seventh-best defensive record in the division.

Neal Maupay was the club’s top scorer in the previous campaign, netting eight goals in 36 appearances across all competitions.

Players In

  • Enock Mwepu – Red Bull Salzburg (£20.70m)
  • Kjell Scherpen – Ajax (£4.50m)

Brighton have bolstered their midfield with the signing on Zambia international Enock Mwepu, who joins from Austrian side Salzburg.

With Mathew Ryan leaving for Spanish club Real Sociedad, former Ajax youngster Kjell Scherpen has been brought in to provide competition for Robert Sanchez between the sticks.

Players Out

  • Ben White – Arsenal (£52.65m)
  • Alireza Jahanbakhsh – Feyenoord (£0.99m)
  • Davy Propper – PSV Eindhoven (Free)
  • Mathew Ryan – Real Sociedad (Free)
  • Jose Izquierdo – Released

Ben White is the obvious high-profile departure here, leaving the Amex for Arsenal in a club-record £52.65m deal.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Davy Propper have both left for the Netherlands, joining Feyenoord and PSV, respectively. Jose Izquierdo has also been released.

• Brighton’s Key Player

Yves Bissouma – While Lewis Dunk is a standout performer in the backline, Yves Bissouma has made a real name for himself in the middle of the park over the past couple of years.

The hard-working midfielder breaks up play and offers excellent protection to the defence. On top of that, his long-range shooting gives Brighton a different dimension in attack.

• What Can Brighton Achieve in 2021/22?

After proving they can compete with some of the top teams in the division, Brighton should be able to improve on last season’s sixteenth-place finish.

If forwards like Danny Welbeck and Aaron Connolly can help Maupay in the goal-scoring department, the Seagulls should be able to secure a respectable mid-table finish.
