England and Croatia kick off their Euro 2020 campaigns on Sunday as the iconic Wembley Stadium hosts the first match in Group D.

Elsewhere in the group, the Czech Republic and Scotland will be looking to upset the odds and prevent the frontrunners from reaching the knockout phase.

Following back-to-back 1-0 wins over Austria and Romania, the Three Lions head into the European Championship on a six-game winning streak.

After beating Iceland 4-0 at the end of 2020, Gareth Southgate’s men saw off San Marino, Albania and Poland during March’s World Cup qualifiers.

In fact, England have only lost two of their last 16 games in all competitions – picking up 13 wins and one draw in the process.

It is also worth pointing out that Southgate’s side have kept 12 clean sheets in their last 16 matches, including five in their previous six.

England’s squad is packed with exciting young players, although Harry Kane is arguably the Three Lions’ most important player.

The Tottenham forward picked up his third Premier League Golden Boot this year, bagging 33 goals and 17 assists in all competitions during the 2020/21 campaign.

On the flip side, Croatia were beaten by Belgium last time out – meaning they come into Euro 2020 on a two-game winless run.

Looking at the bigger picture, Croatia have only managed to win two of their last nine matches in all competitions.

Although Saturday’s clash isn’t technically an away game for the Croatians, their recent away record is worth considering.

Indeed, Croatia have picked up just one victory in their previous 12 away outings, and that win came all the way back in November 2020.

Head-to-head: The two nations have faced each other ten times over the years. England have recorded five wins, Croatia have picked up three wins, while the other two matches were drawn.

Let’s not forget that Croatia beat England in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup. However, the last time the countries met, England beat Croatia 2-1.

Team news: Trent Alexander-Arnold has been forced to pull out of the England squad due to injury. Brighton’s Ben White has been called up as his replacement.

Croatia’s aging squad includes Real Madrid’s Luka Modric, along with Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic and Inter Milan duo Marcelo Brozovic and Ivan Perisic.

The last three meetings between these two sides have produced a win for each nation, as well as one draw. Those results suggest that both teams are relatively evenly matched.

With that in mind, Forebet predicts that England and Croatia will play out a low-scoring draw on Sunday.
