Palmeiras host Chapecoense on Serie A matchday 2 with both clubs seeking their first points of the young campaign.
Despite finishing seventh in the 2020 Serie A standings, Palmeiras had a brilliant campaign in terms of winning cups. The Big Green won the Copa Libertadores, Paulista State Tournament, and the Copa do Brasil.
Now, manager Abel Ferreira, who was the team’s third coach in 2020, aims to get the team into the top four of the Serie A standings. Chapecoense, on the other hand, were promoted to Serie A after winning the second division in 2020.
Coach Jair Ventura watched the team fall on opening day of the Serie A season, 3-0 to Red Bull Bragantino. It could be a difficult season for the newly promoted side.
Palmeiras and Chapecoense have met 14 times since 2013 in all competitions. The Big Green have defeated Chapecoense six times while drawing three matches. Chapecoense have claimed five wins during that 14-match timeframe.
The Big Green are on a three-match winning streak against Chapecoense. The last time these sides met was in the 2019 Serie A. Palmeiras won both games as the Western Hurricane were relegated to Serie B at the end of the campaign.
Like Chapecoense, Palmeiras lost one Serie A matchday 1. They fell 1-0 to Flamengo following a late goal from Pedro.
Both Palmeiras and Chapecoense played in the Copa do Brasil third round in midweek. Palmeiras defeated CRB 1-0 thanks to a goal from Willian.
Chapecoense also won in the Copa do Brasil third round. They defeated ABC Futebol Clube 3-1 courtesy of goals from Anselmo Ramon and two from Mike dos Santos Nenatarvicius.
Ferreira has four players on the injury list. Forward Breno Lopes has a knee injury and is a doubt to play. Forward Gabriel Veron could return due to a thigh injury. Defender Marcos Rocha is a doubt with a thigh injury as is Benjamin Kuscevic.
Chapecoense manager Ventura has no new injuries and has a clean bill health going into the game. He will hope the team can cope with Palmieras’ attack far better than on matchday 1 versus Red Bull Bragantino.
Neither Palmeiras nor Chapecoense were very good in attack on matchday 1. Due to their poor play in front of goal, the two sides should see their game this weekend finish in a low-scoring stalemate.
Palmeiras’ winning streak against Chapecoense should end as the two teams finish in a draw.
