7th placed Union Berlin play host to 9th placed Stuttgart in Saturday’s clash at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei with both teams vying for a possible top six finish in the Bundesliga at stake.

It’s been a solid but stubborn recent period of results for Union Berlin leading up to this encounter as the hosts have suffered just one defeat out of their last eight matches overall, which came in the shape of a heavy 5-2 loss away from home at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Union Berlin have managed just two wins during this sequence with victories gained over Freiburg and Koln while the draw has been the dominant result with no fewer than five stalemates.

Points gained in draws with Schalke, Hoffenheim, Arminia Bielefeld, Hertha Berlin and Bayern Munich have placed Union Berlin four points adrift of 6th placed Bayer Leverkusen prior to this weekend’s action.

The draw has also been prevalent in Union Berlin’s home matches too as their record of  W5 D8 L1 indicates, while 11 of Union Berlin’s last 20 matches at home have ended in stalemate.

Forward trio, Awoniyi, Becker and Dajaku along with defender Giesselmann are all expected to be sidelined with injuries.

Stuttgart are just two league places and one point below their hosts prior to this clash at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei despite suffering a 3-2 loss at home to Borussia Dortmund last time out in the Bundesliga.

Following a solid five-match unbeaten sequence in the Bundesliga which saw VfB Stuttgart pick up wins against Koln, Schalke and Hoffenheim, the visitors have since lost two of their subsequent three matches with an earlier loss incurred against Bayern Munich.

Results away from home have also been inconsistent throughout this Bundesliga campaign but Stuttgart have managed to win just one of their last six matches on the road, losing four of these.

However, Stuttgart may well be confident in picking up at least a point here though as they’ve held their hosts to draws in their previous two visits.

Stuttgart are expected to be missing forward trio, Al Ghaddioui, Gonzalez and Wamangituka along with midfielder Egloff.

Four of the previous five meetings between these two sides have ended in stalemate and Saturday’s clash could also see another draw unfold with very little between the two sides.
