Villarreal return to their Estadio de la Cerámica for this Europa League 2nd leg clash against Croatian outfit, Dinamo Zagreb, holding onto a narrow 1-0 lead following last week’s 1-0 win in the 1st leg at Stadion Maksimir in Zagreb.
Villarreal suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Osasuna in La Liga on the weekend which ended a previous impressive six-match winning streak in all competitions.
It included home and away wins over Dynamo Kyiv in the Europa League along with last week’s 1st leg win at Dynamo Zagreb.
The bigger picture shows that Villarreal have lost just three of their last 12 matches overall in all competitions, while in the Europa League, the hosts have put together a very solid looking 11-match unbeaten run which includes 10 wins.
Results at home have also been impressive of late as Villarreal have won their last five ties on the trot.
They have recorded wins against Sivasspor 5-3, Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-0, Qarabag 3-0, Salzburg 2-1 and Dynamo Kyiv 2-0, so they look in good shape to take the spoils here and progress to the next round.
Dinamo Zagreb face a tough return leg in Spain on Thursday night at the Estadio de la Cerámica as the visitors look to overhaul this 1-goal deficit but they’ll be up against a confident and solid Villarreal outfit in their own backyard for this 2nd leg encounter.
Results overall, in recent times have been generally impressive too for Dinamo Zagreb as they’s lost just twice out of their last 15 matches in all competitions.
Although, both of these losses were incurred in the Europa League with defeats suffered against Tottenham and last week’s 1st leg loss to Villarreal.
The visitors have lost just two of their last 12 ties on the Europa League stage overall but most of their success has been achieved on home turf at their Stadion Maksimir ground in Zagreb while on the road, Dinamo Zagreb have been less convincing.
With just three wins out of their last eight ties away from home in this competition, Dinamo Zagreb could find this 2nd leg a tough assignment especially as they’ve failed to score in four of these eight ties and they’ve lost the last two meetings on the trot against Villarreal as well.
