Newcastle United to claim vital point in fight against relegation
5714

Newcastle United head to Turf Moor to face off with Burnley on Sunday. The Magpies are three points ahead of the Premier League’s relegation zone going into the weekend.

Fulham play on Friday night against Wolverhampton Wanderers and could move out of the relegation zone for at least 36 hours.

Burnley sit in 15th place and are seven points above the relegation zone going into the weekend. They have won just once in their last six games in the league. Burnley also need to pick up points to keep themselves out of relegation trouble. Sunday’s game is a six-point affair between these sides.

The Magpies defeated Burnley 3-1 at St. James’ Park earlier this season in the reverse fixture. Allan Saint-Maximin scored once while Callum Wilson tallied two goals (one from the spot).

Steve Bruce is hopeful that both Saint-Maximin and Wilson will be available following injuries for the game. The duo has been electric for Newcastle United but due to injuries and COVID-19, they have been limited in appearances together.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche will be without the trio of Robbie Brady, Erik Pieters, and Ashley Barnes. Barnes scored Burnley’s only goal in the reverse fixture at St. James’ Park.

Phil Bardsley and Kevin Long are both in line for returns to the team. Bardsley has been off due to family reason while Long has a calf injury keeping him on the sidelines.

As it stands, Saint-Maximin is set to play. It is unknown if the winger will start or come off the bench. Wilson is nearing a return but there is no definitive word on whether he will make the matchday squad.

Ryan Fraser, Andy Carroll, and Federico Fernandez are all three doubts to play due to their respective injuries. Meanwhile, Isaac Hayden and Fabian Schar are both ruled out of the fixture.

Newcastle United are unbeaten in seven of their last nine games against Burnley in the Premier League. Four of those nine games ended in draws. Sunday’s match at Turf Moor is likely to be another stalemate between the two relegation rivals.

Burnley have claimed the second-most draws in the league with nine. Newcastle United have the Premier League’s third-most draws with eight. Despite winning the reverse fixture, Newcastle United will have a lot of pressure on their shoulders.

A score draw between the teams is likely on Sunday at Turf Moor. It won’t move either team too far from relegation, but could provide some breathing space.
