Lille look to grab vital win over Marseille
1621

Although they still sit top of the French top flight with a two-point lead over 2nd placed PSG, Wednesday night’s hosts, Lille, have been slowed down in recent games by unlikely opponents following draws with bottom half outfits, Brest and Strasbourg, in 0-0 and 1-1 stalemates which have allowed PSG to close the gap at the top of Ligue 1.

Lille registered a resounding 4-1 win away from home at Lorient in between the two draws and the hosts still remain unbeaten from their last nine matches overall, but there’s a feeling that Marseille may prove to be stubborn opponents at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Having won seven of these last nine matches though, Lille look to hold the upper hand over Marseille in terms of picking up results and the hosts have lost just once at home all season to date having W8, D5 and L1 so far this term.

Goals haven’t exactly flowed though at home for Lille as eight of their 14 home matches have resulted in under 2.5 goals while seven clean sheets have also contributed to the low-scoring results.

In addition, Lille’s leading goalscorer, Yilmaz (9 goals) is expected to be absent due to a calf injury.

Olympique Marseille extended their unbeaten run in Ligue 1 to four matches overall on the weekend after holding Lyon to a 1-1 draw on home turf at their Orange Velodrome and this followed  draws with Bordeaux and Nantes along with a 3-2 home win over Nice.

Marseille now sit in 7th place on the Ligue 1 ladder and despite their problems on and off the field, the visitors are still only two points adrift of the top six in the French top flight and have tightened up their act in recent weeks.

However, the bigger picture shows that Marseille have managed to collect just the one win out of their last 10 matches overall, which consists of five draws, four defeats and one win, while away from home they continue to struggle.

It’s now seven matches without a win on their travels for Marseille who have picked up points in draws at Dijon, Lens, Bordeaux and Nantes but have also suffered losses on the road at Rennes, Angers and Monaco too.

The visitors are expected to be without the services of defenders Amavi (muscle injury) and Sakai (red card).

Low-scoring games away from home has also been a theme though for Marseille as eight of their 13 matches to date on their travels have resulted in under 2.5 goals and this trend could continue on Wednesday night.
