PSV to Turn this Tie Around in Eindhoven

Many people may have written PSV off following their 4-2 defeat in Greece last week but having scored two away goals, the Dutch side could still turn this around.

Bouchalakis put Olympiakos in front in the 9th-minute against PSV, but Zahavi equalised for the visitors shortly after. The hosts moved back in front through M’Vila shortly before the break but there was still enough time remaining in the first half for Zahavi to score his second of the game and make it 2-2.

Amazingly, there was a fifth goal before the referee blew his whistle for half-time, El-Arabi made it 3-2 to the home side. The goals all but dried up in the second half but there was time for Masouras to score a fourth for Olympiakos.

PSV recovered from the disappointment of their defeat in Greece with a 3-1 home win over Vitesse in the Eredivisie, while Olympiakos were held to a 1-1 draw at home in the Greek Super League 1. PSV have performed much better at home than they have on the road this season and that is shown in their recent results.

The Dutch side have only won two of their last six matches, both of which arrived at home, and the four games they failed to win were all away. Olympiakos have won four of their last six matches and head into the 2nd leg as the form favourites, but five of those games were at home and the one they lost was on the road.

Goals are expected once again when these two sides meet, as both teams have scored in five of the host’s and four of the visitor’s last six outings in all competitions.

Over 3.5 goals have been scored in four of PSV’s last six matches as well, so the 2nd leg could end up having a similar scoreline as the 1st.

PSV look set to be without Olivier Boscagli, Mohammed Ihattaren, Noni Madueke, Cody Gakpo, Richard Ledezma and Maximiliano Romero this week, as each are struggling with injuries.

Avraam Papadopoulos is the only real injury concern for the visitors ahead of Thursday’s clash, and a thigh injury is expected to keep him out until sometime in March.

Given the home record of the hosts, PSV are expected to win the 2nd leg but with both teams looking likely to score only specific scorelines will see the Dutch side through to the next round.

This tie feels like it will go all the way down to away goals and a 3-1 win for PSV would be enough to knock Olympiakos out of the competition.
