Nimes and Lorient to produce goals in relegation battle

Second from bottom Nimes take on third from bottom outfit, Lorient, in Wednesday night’s crucial relegation battle in Ligue 1 at the Stade des Costières with a precious three points up for grabs for both teams here.

Nimes find themselves in the relegation zone of the French top flight but the hosts have won their last two matches on the trot with victories gained over Dijon and Bordeaux, so they’ll have their tails up here ahead of this crucial ‘six-pointer’.

It’s been a very disappointing campaign though on the whole for Nimes as they’ve lost 16 of their 25 matches to date this term and have managed to pick up just three wins out of their last 14 matches overall, so the prospects of a home win here do seem to hang in the balance.

Goals have featured on a regular basis though where Nimes are concerned as the hosts possess the second-worst defensive record at home in Ligue 1, conceding 27 goals in 12 matches while six of their 12 home matches have been over 2.5 goals.

Injury to defender Briancon on the weekend may also further impact their defensive line while numerous absentees include Roux, Sarr, Dias, Martinez and Depres.

Lorient suffered a heavy 4-1 loss at home to Lille in the weekend’s action in the French top flight which has left them third from bottom and occupying the relegation play-off spot although this is their only defeat in their last six matches overall.

Lorient had previously put together a promising five-match sequence without defeat in Ligue 1 which included wins against Dijon 3-2, PSG 3-2 and a 1-0 win over Reims, with all three wins coming on home turf at their Stade Yves Allainmat.

A 2-2 draw with Monaco followed but it’ll be interesting to see how Lorient respond on Wednesday night after their 4-1 thrashing to Lille, but again, goals have featured with four of Lorient’s last six matches producing three goals or more.

Lorient also possess the joint second worst defensive record away from home in Ligue 1 behind only to bottom club Dijon, while seven of Lorient’s 12 away matches have also resulted in over 2.5 goals, and the visitors are also set to be missing Marveaux, Fontaine and Saunier.

Three of the last four meetings between these two teams have seen over 2.5 goals and this trend looks set to continue on Wednesday night.
