Man Utd host Liverpool for FA Cup showdown

Manchester United and Liverpool clash for the second time in the space of a week on Sunday, this time facing off at Old Trafford in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The two sides clashed at Anfield last Sunday, with Liverpool dominating an entertaining goalless draw on that occasion.

However, both teams have played a Premier League game since then, meaning first-place Man Utd sit six points ahead of fourth-place Liverpool in the table.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men extended their unbeaten league run to 13 games on Wednesday, producing a hard-fought 2-1 win over Fulham.

The Red Devils have clinched ten wins and three draws since losing to Arsenal in early November, and they now have a two-point lead at the summit.

With 36 goals in 19 league games, Man Utd are the second-highest scorers in the top-flight. However, an iffy defensive record means they have the joint-fifth best goal difference.

Man Utd advanced to the fourth round with a 1-0 victory over Championship side Watford, with Scott McTominay scoring the only goal of the game.

But having racked up 66% possession and recorded 19 shots (seven on target), it’s fair to say that Solskjaer’s men deserved to progress.

On the flip side, Liverpool’s lengthy unbeaten run at Anfield was brought to an end by Burnley on Thursday.

The Reds hadn’t lost a league match at home since April 2017, but the Clarets secured a 1-0 victory, thanks to a penalty from Ashley Barnes.

Things were looking up when Jurgen Klopp’s men thrashed Crystal Palace 7-0 just before Christmas, yet it’s been all downhill since then.

Three draws and two defeats have seen Liverpool drop down the table, with Klopp’s side failing to score in each of their previous four Premier League outings.

Liverpool beat a supremely young Aston Villa side 4-1 in the third round of the FA Cup, but you can’t read too much into that result.

Head-to-head: Man Utd haven't beaten Liverpool in their last four attempts, with one defeat and three draws coming since 2019.

The two sides last clashed in the FA Cup back in 2012, with Liverpool claiming a 2-1 victory on that occasion.Team news: Brandon Williams, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are all injured for Man Utd, while Victor Lindelof’s fitness is currently in the balance.

Liverpool are still without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Diogo Jota, although Kostas Tsimikas has returned from injury.

Given that Liverpool are struggling to score goals at the moment, Man Utd will be confident of getting one over their rivals this weekend.

Forebet predicts that Man Utd will claim a low-scoring victory over Liverpool, while a clean sheet is also on the cards for the home side.
