PSG win and goals likely against Montpellier

Friday night’s hosts, PSG, will be seeking to capture a third league in on the trot when they play host to mid-table Montpellier as PSG also look to open up a lead at the top of Ligue 1.

A six-match unbeaten run in the French top flight has slowly but surely resulted in PSG climbing the Ligue 1 table and in the process, eroding former current league leaders, Lille’s, lead at the top of the domestic top flight.

Four wins out of these six matches includes victories over Lorient, Strasbourg, Brest and Angers while also boosting their goal difference to an impressive +33 prior to this weekend’s action.

The goalscoring exploits of forwards Mbappe (12 goals) and former Everton striker Kean (9 goals) has helped to fire the hosts to three wins on the trot at their Parcs des Princes ground where five of their seven home wins to date have also resulted in over 2.5 goals as well.

Previous history is also favours PSG as the hosts have won the last three meetings at home on the trot against Montpellier, winning 5-0, 5-1 and 4-0 respectively.

Montpellier may therefore be bracing themselves as they head off to the nation’s capital for this Friday night clash against the Ligue 1 title-holders, especially as the visitors have failed to win any of their last six matches in the French top flight.

Four defeats out of these last six matches have seen Montpellier lose to Metz, Lille, Marseille and Monaco, and this lean period of results has also seen Montpellier drop down the Ligue 1 table to 11th place.

Montpellier had earlier enjoyed a purple patch of form during November which saw them collect four wins on the trot with victories gained over Saint-Etienne, Bordeaux, Strasbourg and Lorient respectively, but they’ve since managed to pick up just one further win from their subsequent eight matches overall.

Results away from home have also been inconsistent with only their November sequence of wins to show for their efforts on their travels and they make their way to Paris having failed to win their last two away matches, following a draw at Brest and defeat at Marseille.

Anything other than a PSG win here would be considered a major upset and goals should also feature here too.
