Despite gaining a surprise 2-1 win away from home at Napoli in midweek, Monday night’s hosts, Spezia, face a tough evening ahead of them when they play host to Sampdoria at their Stadio Alberto Picco, where they’re still looking to pick up their first home win of this season.
The shock 2-1 win at Napoli ended a dismal run of eight matches without a win in Serie A which included five defeats in the shape of losses against Lazio, Crotone, Inter Milan, Genoa and Hellas Verona and although Spezia picked up points in draws with Atalanta, Cagliari and Bologna, these were overshadowed by the defeats.
Spezia have managed to pick up just three league wins throughout this season’s Serie A campaign which have all been achieved on the road at Udinese, Benevento and Napoli, but results at home have been disappointing as Spezia are still without a home win from their eight matches played to date.
Within these eight home matches have been five defeats while Spezia have managed to keep just one clean sheet which could prove to be pivotal in the outcome against Sampdoria.
Onto Sampdoria and the visitors also registered a somewhat surprising 2-1 home win against Inter Milan during the week and they too will be hoping they can build off that encouraging win when they make the trip to face Spezia on Monday night.
Sampdoria will head into this clash on the back of three wins from their last five matches overall as the visitors had previously picked up wins against Hellas Verona and Crotone in a 2-1 win away from home and a 3-1 win at home respectively.
Overall, it’s been a rather inconsistent season so far for Sampdoria who unsurprisingly find themselves sitting in a mid-table position of 11th on the Serie A ladder but the main difference between themselves and their hosts, Spezia, is that Samp possess the quality to grind out results whether they’re home or away.
An away record comprising of three wins, one draw and four defeats may not seem inspiring but although they’ve lost at Juventus, Cagliari, Napoli and Roma, three of these four losses were incurred against teams sitting in the top six of Serie A.
Sampdoria have more or less held their own though this term and they look the more likely to find a way to win here against Spezia.
