Rennes remained in 4th spot in the French top flight following their 0-0 draw away from home at Nantes but the hosts know that they need to keep winning as the likes of Monaco and Angers are just two points behind Rennes and hot on their tail.
Rennes had previously put together an impressive four-match winning streak which included wins against Nice, Marseille, Lorient and Metz but they face another tough challenge in the shape of the Ligue 1 leaders, Lyon, this Saturday.
The hosts will hold home advantage at their Roazhon Park where they’ve won their last two matches on the trot but five wins, one draw and three defeats is not quite as consistent as Rennes would have hoped and they’ve also managed to keep just one clean sheet in their nine home matches to date this term.
The bigger picture shows that Rennes have lost just four out of their last 19 matches overall at home but although they’ve won four of the last five meetings against Lyon, their one defeat was at their Roazhon Park in a 1-0 loss back in March 2019.
Lyon did what was expected of them against Lens on Wednesday night by recording a 3-2 win but the scoreline was closer than many expected, but nevertheless, Lyon extended their unbeaten record to an impressive 15 matches and won their third match on the trot.
The visitors have now won eight out of their last nine matches and they know they will have to sustain this current run of form if they’re to pip their closest rivals, PSG, for the Ligue 1 title this season.
Lyon currently hold a three-point buffer over the 2nd placed Paris side but having won their last four away matches on the trot with victories picked up at Angers, Metz, a 1-0 win at PSG and Nice (4-1), the visitors will be in confident mood ahead of this weekend’s action in Ligue 1.
The bigger picture also shows that Lyon have been quite hard to beat on their travels as they’ve lost just four out of their last 17 matches and they bring a seven-match unbeaten sequence on the road into this important clash as well.
Lyon may therefore nick a narrow win at Rennes this Saturday.
