The Groupama Stadium provides the venue for Wednesday night’s clash between hosts, Lyon and the visitors, Lens, as the home side look to maintain their position at the top of Ligue 1 with all three points here.
Recent back-to-back wins against Nice 4-1 away from home and a 3-0 victory over Nantes at home have sustained Lyon’s ambitions of a possible Ligue 1 title in what has been an impressive so far for the hosts.
Following a slow and sluggish start to the new Ligue 1 campaign which saw Lyon pick up just one win out of their opening six matches, courtesy of a 4-1 win against Dijon, the hosts have since exploded into excellent form, winning nine of their subsequent 11 matches thereafter.
Along with 2nd placed Lille, Lyon are the only other side yet to taste defeat at home in this season’s Ligue 1 campaign and the hosts are in fine fettle at home having won four of their last five matches which includes victories over Monaco, Saint-Etienne, Reims and Nantes, scoring a total of 12 goals in these four victories.
Although Lens currently sit in 7th place and just a point adrift of the top five in the French top flight, the visitors look to have their work cut out ahead of their trip to Lyon for this midweek clash in Ligue 1.
Recent results have been quite inconsistent where Lens have been concerned as they’ve won three, drawn one and lost three of their last seven matches overall and although they’ve picked up wins against Rennes, Monaco and Brest in recent weeks, these victories have been offset by losses against Angers, Montpellier and Metz.
Lens had previously put together a three-match winning streak away from home with wins collected at Dijon, Rennes and Monaco but their last outing on the road in the French top flight ended in disappointing fashion as they were handed a 2-0 defeat away at mid-table Metz.
Previous recent history though is leaning in favour of Wednesday night’s hosts, Lyon, as they’ve registered wins over Lens in each of the previous two encounters;
A 2-0 win away in Ligue 1 and a 3-2 win in the Coupe de France beforehand, and with solid results under their belts at home, Lyon look set for further success here.
