Lille to keep pace at top with win over Angers

2nd placed Lille will be looking to extend their unbeaten run in Ligue 1 to eight matches when they play host to Angers at their Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Wednesday night as the hosts push for top spot in the French top flight.

This season’s Ligue 1 title looks like being a very tightly-fought affair with only one point separating league leaders, Lyon, from 3rd placed PSG, and in between, Lille will be seeking to post a fifth win in six matches against Angers following a decent spell of results.

Recent wins against Monaco, Bordeaux, Dijon and Montpellier have helped lift Christophe Galtier’s side up into the early reckoning for a possible tilt at the Ligue 1 title and as the hosts still remain unbeaten at home so far in this campaign, winning six and drawing three, Lille look in good shape to add to their points tally here.

Lille have been solid at home this term and amongst their impressive results at their Stade Pierre-Mauroy they’ve held the likes of Lyon and PSG to draws along with keeping five clean sheets in their nine home matches to date.

Angers have enjoyed a more modest campaign so far in this season’s Ligue 1 as the visitors currently occupy a mid-table position of 9th.

And although they head into this Wednesday night clash at Lille on the back of a 2-1 home win over Marseille, that’s been Angers’s only highlight in their last four matches.

Draws on the road at bottom half dwellers, Saint-Etienne and Nantes, in 0-0 and 1-1 stalemates were either side of a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to lowly Strasbourg, so all is not quite 100% in the Angers camp it seems.

Nevertheless, following heavy back-to-back defeats on the road at Montpellier 4-1 and PSG 6-1, Angers have since rallied on their travels by putting together a decent looking five-match unbeaten run away from home in Ligue 1.

Wins at Rennes, Nimes and Lens should give Angers a timely boost here but they’re expected to face another stiff challenge in the shape of Lille whom they’ve lost to in each of their last three meetings and twice on the trot away from home at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
