On Thursday evening, AEK Athens host Sporting Braga in Group G of the Europa League, in a game that will be pivotal in deciding who makes it through to the last-32 of the competition.
Braga are currently second in the group, three points behind Leicester City and four points clear of Thursday evening’s opponents in the race for qualification for the knockout stages.
A win would seal the Portuguese team’s place in the knockout stages. Even a draw would be enough for qualification if fourth place Zorya fail to beat Leicester in the group’s other game.
The scenario is simple for the home side, in that they have to win and that may still not be enough if Braga wins their final group game.
AEK Athens heads into this game on a good recent run of form, as they have won they four of their last five matches in all competitions.
However, the one game that the Greek team didn’t win in that stellar run could prove crucial, as it was a surprise 3-0 defeat at home against Zorya.
The win put the Ukrainian team level on points with AEK. Their last outing in the Europa League was also the only time in five competitive games where Massimo Carrera’s team has not scored two or more goals.
Like their hosts, Sporting Braga head into this clash in confident mood, as they are unbeaten in four games, having recorded three wins.
Their recent form has moved the visitors to second place in the Portuguese top-flight table. However, picking up just one point from back-to-back encounters with Leicester has hindered their Europa League progress.
