Mali Expected to Edge Tight and Tense Affair with Namibia
2876

Mali sit joint-top of Group A alongside Guinea, after both teams secured a win and a draw from their opening two African Cup of Nations qualifiers and scored 4-goals whilst only conceding 2. Mali now go up against a Namibia side who have 3pts to their name and could cause the home side a few issues on Friday.

These two nations locked horns four times during the 1990s, with Mali winning their first encounter 2-1 back in 1994. The next two meetings, in 1995 and 1999, were won by Namibia, and the pair played each other again in 1999, but the match ended in a goalless draw.

Mali have won three of their last five matches in all competitions, and three of those games have produced over 2.5 goals. Both teams have scored in two of Mali’s last five outings, at home to Guinea and away at South Africa. Mali have managed to keep clean sheets in three of their last four outings, including last month’s 3-0 friendly win over Ghana.

Namibia have only managed to win two of their last six international matches, including the 2-1 victory over Chad last year in the opening round of qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Two of the visitor’s last three outings have seen both teams score, but under 2.5 goals have been produced in five of their last six fixtures.

Namibia have lost two of their last three away games, failing to score in both of those losses. Their last away game in Group A ended in a 2-0 defeat at Guinea, and a trip to Mali is expected to be equally as difficult for Namibia.

While the visitors have a decent record against Mali, the pair haven’t gone head to head since the late 1990s. Mali have more household names within their squad and look likely to challenge Guinea for the top spot in Group A.

Forebet believes that Friday’s game will produce under 2.5 goals and has backed Mali to claim a narrow 1-0 win, although the hosts have scored exactly 2-goals in three of their last four matches, while the visitors have conceded exactly 2-goals in two of their last four outings.

The first goal will be key in this game and Mali are expected to score it, but if Namibia do, then the visitors are in with a chance of taking home a share of the spoils.
