Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich set for Bundesliga thriller

Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich will meet on Saturday in the Bundesliga in the headline match of the weekend. Der Klassiker will stop the nation and the winner of the game could have the inside track to the Bundesliga title.

Lucien Favre’s Borussia Dortmund head into the weekend with 15 points from 18 possible. Their only blemish came at Augsburg in a shock 2-0 defeat. Since that 2-0 loss, Borussia Dortmund have won four straight games to nil. The Yellow and Black have not conceded a goal in the last 360 minutes of football.

In fact, the two goals Borussia Dortmund conceded to Augsburg are the only two goals allowed by the team this season. Can Bayern Munich get goals against their hated rival? Absolutely as Bayern Munich are the Bundesliga’s top scorers with 24 goals.

The reigning treble winners have conceded nine times with four of those goals coming in a shock 4-1 loss to Hoffenheim. Still, their goal difference has them at the head of the table thanks to RB Leipzig’s 1-0 loss to Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend.

RB Leipzig could be the big winners of the weekend in the Bundesliga. If Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich draw, the Red Bulls would move back to first place with a win.

Saturday’s game is the second meeting between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich this season. They played in the German Super Cup in September with Bayern Munich claiming a 3-2 win.

The last time Borussia Dortmund defeated Bayern Munich in the league, it was the 2018-19 season. The victory came at Signal Iduna Park, 3-2. The 3-2 scoreline has been seen in three of the last 11 games in all competitions between these clubs.

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland is in great form. He has scored 10 goals in 10 games this season. One of those 10 goals came against Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup. He has five Bundesliga goals in five league appearances.

After missing last weekend’s win against Armenia Bielefeld, Haaland scored twice in midweek in the Champions League.

Bayern Munich won 6-2 in the Champions League against Red Bull Salzburg. They are full of confidence, but may have suffered a blow this week with the possible departure of centre-back David Alaba in January. His contract is up in the summer and could be sold to Liverpool before leaving for free.

Alaba is expected to partner Jerome Boateng on Saturday in defence as Niklas Sule is self-isolating after a positive COVID-19 test. Alphonso Davies is also out with a serious ankle injury.

Ten of the last 12 games between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich finished with over 2.5 goals scored. Five games saw both teams score.

Borussia Dortmund should gain a home win against their bitter rival and take sole possession of first place. Expect over 2.5 goals and both teams to score in a thriller.
