UEFA Nations League A is always a difficult league due to the fact all the top European nations are involved. Thanks to their recent success, Iceland have been included in Nations League A and have been drawn in a group containing Belgium, England, and Denmark.
On Wednesday the 14th of October, Iceland welcome Belgium to Laugardalsvöllur, Reykjavík.
Iceland come into the match on the back of a disappointing 3-0 home defeat against Denmark. It appeared as though the teams were going to go in level at half time but the Danes made the breakthrough late in the first half.
Disaster struck for Iceland at the beginning of the second half and Denmark extended their advantage inside the first minute and added a third with just under 30 minutes of the game remaining.
Iceland failed to get back into the match of that was their second successive defeat at home following the 1-0 loss against England in their opening match of the group. Sandwiched between the two games was a trip to Belgium and despite taking the lead early in the first half, Iceland slumped to a 5-1 defeat.
It appears as though Iceland are going to be relegated to Nations League B but they will want to take at least a point with them. Iceland have yet to get off the mark and this is their final home match of the group. Trends show Iceland have won 4 of their last 6 home games but the victories have come against Andorra, El Salvador, Canada, and Romania.
Belgium will be hoping to get back to winning ways following their 2-1 defeat against England on the weekend. Belgium started the match strongly and took the lead from the penalty spot.
They will feel as though they should have been leading at half time but England were awarded a penalty following a foul from a corner to equalise. England came out strongly in the second half and scored a deflected goal to win the match.
It was the first defeat of the group for Belgium who went into the game defending a 100% record. They started their Nations League campaign with a good 2-0 victory in Denmark and followed that with a commanding 5-1 win over Iceland at home.
Trends show Belgium have won 6 of their last 7 away matches. They have scored 2 or more goals in each of those victories and will be aiming for more of the same in this game.
Looking ahead to the team news and Iceland may have to rotate some of their regular starting XI. Jon Bodhvarsson will be hoping to start in attack for the hosts.
Belgium could also make some changes from their last fixture. Divock Origi, Michy Batshuayi, Leander Dendoncker, and Leandro Trossard may all feature.
