The CONMEBOL 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification begins this week with a full round of fixtures including the meeting between Paraguay and Peru. The match will take place at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco in Asunción on the 8th of October with both teams hoping to get off to a winning start.

Paraguay last played a competitive match in June 2019 when they lost via a penalty shootout to Brazil in the Copa America. They reached the quarter final stage of the competition but did so without winning a match. Paraguay came through the group stages having drawn games against Qatar and Argentina plus suffered defeat at the hands of Colombia.

Trends show Paraguay have been struggling to win games for some time and including friendly matches they have won only 3 of their last 18 games, which is a poor record. Their most recent victories have come in friendly matches against Jordan and Bulgaria and they last played in November 2019 against Saudi Arabia. That game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Paraguay are a team who struggle to score goals and throughout their 2019 Copa America campaign they managed 3 goals in 4 games, two of which came against Qatar. They have scored only 2 goals in their last 4 games and they came against Slovakia and Bulgaria.

Like their opponents, Peru last played competitive football in the 2019 Copa America. They went one stage further than Paraguay by reaching the semi-final of the competition but were defeated 3-1 by the hosts, Brazil. However, Peru managed to win 2 matches in the competition as they defeated Bolivia 3-1 and Chile 3-0, the latter of which was an excellent result at the quarter final stage of the tournament.

Peru have played several friendly matches since the Copa America but have failed to win in their last 3 attempts. They have suffered 1-0 defeats at the hands of Uruguay and Colombia and were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Uruguay in October 2019.

Peru enjoyed a good World Cup qualifying campaign last time out as they reached the finals in Russia. During qualifying they managed to defeat Paraguay 4-1 away from home and will be feeling confident of picking up maximum points again in this match.

Team news and Paraguay are a team lacking in goals. Their top goal scorers are forward Ángel Romero and midfielder Óscar Romero who have 4 goals each in a combined 62 appearances.

Peru on the other hand can call upon the experienced forward Jefferson Farfán, who has 27 international goals to his name. However, he does not currently have a club team so it will be interesting to see if he starts this game.

Following on from their successful 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign and their strong showing at the 2019 Copa America, Peru come into this game as the favourites to win. They should be able to score the goals to come out on top and we could see both teams finding the back of the net plus over 2.5 goals.
