Can Borussia Dortmund win a second straight German Super Cup?

Borussia Dortmund won the German Super Cup in 2019 as Jadon Sancho stole the show for the Yellow and Black. Now, Lucien Favre’s team aim to claim a second straight German Super Cup against Bayern Munich.

Just as Hansi Flick’s team looked invincible, they were thrashed and completely played off the park by Hoffenheim on matchday 2 in the Bundesliga.

The loss came just days after Bayern Munich lifted the UEFA Super Cup in Budapest. They defeated Europa League winners Sevilla, 2-1. Now, Flick needs his players to wipe themselves off and bounce back against a Borussia Dortmund team seeking another piece of silverware.

Borussia Dortmund also go into the German Super Cup match following a loss in the Bundesliga. Favre’s side were shocked by Augsburg, 2-0, away.

Both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have their sights set on winning the Bundesliga. The latter’s loss to Hoffenheim should give the rest of the league hope.

The Yellow and Black have a good record against Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup. They have won once and drawn once in their last three meetings against Bayern Munich in the showpiece fixture.

Bayern Munich’s fixture congestion can be to blame for their loss against Hoffenheim. The Bavarians were lethargic in the game and never got out of second gear.

Flick’s team played throughout August in the Champions League before starting the domestic campaign. A trip to Budapest in a high-profile UEFA Super Cup match didn’t help with fatigue.

Robert Lewandowski did not start against Hoffenheim. Flick chose to rest his star player and gave Joshua Zirkzee the start. Lewandowski should be restored to his usual starting No. 9 position on Wednesday night.

Leroy Sane is a doubt after suffering a knock against Hoffenheim. He left the game early due to the injury. Flick will most likely start Kingsley Coman in Sane’s place and Leon Goretzka should also return to the starting XI.

Favre is likely to rotate his team for the German Super Cup. He could favour some of his more experienced players for the game. Forwards Julian Brandt and Marco Reus are in line to start. Gio Reyna and Jude Bellingham could find themselves on the bench from the start.

Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho are set to start the game. New transfer speculation over Sancho began this week with Manchester United to put in a new bid for the player. If Sancho doesn’t start – or make the team – it could mean a deal is agreed; but don’t expect one to occur.

Borussia Dortmund may have lost their league encounters with Bayern Munich last term, but they have been excellent in the German Super Cup against them. Fatigue is getting to Bayern Munich’s top stars, especially older ones like Lewandowski.

Wednesday night’s German Super Cup should be a close cagey game as Borussia Dortmund win the trophy for a second straight season.
