Dynamo Kiev host AZ Alkmaar at NSC Olimpiyskiy on Tuesday evening in the third qualifying round for the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League.
Both sides were entered directly into the third round of qualifying after finishing second in the respective domestic leagues last season.
Dynamo Kiev finished a whopping 23 points behind Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukrainian Premier League, while AZ Alkmaar were level with Ajax on 56 points when the Dutch Eredivisie campaign was curtailed.
The Ukrainians are undefeated in their opening two league games this season. Kiev kicked off their campaign with a 4-1 victory over Olimpik Donetsk before drawing 0-0 with Desna.
Kiev find themselves second to Vorskla in the current Ukrainian Premier League standings, although it is still very early doors.
On the flip side, AZ Alkmaar are yet to play a domestic game this term. The new Eredivisie season only kicked off at the weekend, but AZ were not involved.
It’s fair to say that AZ can count themselves very unlucky to have been awarded second place in the Eredivisie last season.
Alkmaar only conceded 17 goals in 25 league games last term and finished with an identical record to Ajax (W18-D2-L5). However, they finished as runners-up due to their inferior goal difference.
On a brighter note, the club have so far been able to keep hold of their young stars in the transfer window.
21-year-old Calvin Stengs, 19-year-old Myron Boadu and 22-year-old Teun Koopmeiners all shone last season, and it looks as though they will represent AZ in the upcoming campaign.
Head-to-head: Dynamo Kiev and AZ Alkmaar have only faced each other twice over the years, with the two teams clashing in the Europa League back in 2010/11.
The Ukrainians won both games back then, winning 2-1 in the Netherlands before claiming a 2-0 victory on home soil.
Team news: Dynamo Kiev will be without injured trio Mykyta Burda, Denys Popov and Oleksandr Tymchyk on Tuesday, wihile Artem Besedin is serving a doping ban.
As for AZ Alkmaar, centre-back Pantelis Chatzidiakos and attacking midfielder Jeremy Helmer are both on the treatment table.
Given that AZ haven’t played any competitive football for a number of months, it feels like Dynamo Kiev have the upper hand here.
The Dutch outfit will inevitably be a bit rusty, so Kiev will be confident of maintaining their unbeaten start to the 2020/21 campaign.
Forebet predicts that Dynamo Kiev will score over 2.5 goals on their way to victory over AZ Alkmaar on Tuesday.
