Paris Saint-Germain to thrash Lyon in Coupe de la Ligue final

Fresh off of their French Cup final victory over Saint-Etienne, Paris Saint-Germain meet Lyon in the Coupe de la Ligue on Friday night. The Parisians will hope to win a second trophy in as many weeks.

The Coupe de la Ligue final is a warm-up for Paris Saint-Germain ahead of their Champions League quarterfinal showdown with Atalanta. With the knockout rounds now just single elimination, Paris Saint-Germain may have their best opportunity to win the Champions League.

Lyon are also still alive in the Champions League and set for a second leg last-16 game against Juventus. The French club are up 1-0 on aggregate and could claim their first Coupe de la Ligue since the early 2000s.

Les Gones have won the Coupe de la Ligue just once. That win came all the way back in 2001. Lyon have been runners-up four times in the cup tournament.

The big news heading into the cup final is Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe’s injury. The French forward suffered an ankle injury against Saint-Etienne in the French Cup final. Mbappe is ruled out of the Coupe de la Ligue final and the club’s Champions League quarterfinal match.

The Champions League matches will come thick and fast. If Mbappe’s injury is severe, he is likely to miss out on the rest of the tournament.

Paris Saint-Germain have won three matches in a row in all competitions against Lyon. They picked up three victories this past season versus Lyon in Ligue 1 and the French Cup. Paris Saint-Germain outscored Lyon 10-3 in their three meetings.

Although Paris Saint-Germain scored a single goal in the French Cup final, they overpowered Saint-Etienne. Neymar claimed a 14th-minute goal and will be likely to create or score another goal versus Lyon.

One of the worries surrounding both Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon is that neither side will be fit to face their opponents in the Champions League. Their Champions League opponents Atalanta and Juventus have both completed their domestic seasons.

Lyon have just one player expected to miss the game as Oumar Solet is recovering from an ACL injury. The previously mentioned Mbappe is the only player Thomas Tuchel is missing.

Seven of the last 10 games between the clubs finished with both teams scoring goals. Meanwhile, eight of the last 10 games between the clubs finished with over 2.5 goals scored. Those trends should continue as Paris Saint-Germain thrash Lyon in the Coupe de la Ligue final.
