Arsenal and Chelsea ready for FA Cup final

In the final game of the English football calendar, London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea meet in the 2020 FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

This is a repeat of the 2017 FA Cup final. Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 on that occasion, but who will lift the famous old trophy this time around?

It’s fair to say that both teams have endured challenging routes to the final. The Gunners kicked off their campaign by edging past Leeds before seeing off Premier League rivals Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

It appeared to be the end of the road for Arsenal when they drew tournament holders and favourites Manchester City, but a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang double fired Mikel Arteta’s men into the final.

Meanwhile, Chelsea began with two relatively straightforward wins over Championship opponents Nottingham Forest and Hull City.

The Blues were then forced to get past Liverpool, Leicester, and Manchester United to reach the final. Chelsea’s 3-1 semi-final victory over in-form Man Utd was impressive.

Ultimately, it’s been a disappointing season for Arsenal. The club registered their lowest Premier League finish for 25 years, but a win on Saturday would transform the campaign into a successful one.

The Gunners ended up finishing eighth in the Premier League standings – ten points behind fourth-place Chelsea.

On the other hand, Chelsea’s season must be viewed as a success. The club came into 2019/20 with a transfer ban and without talisman Eden Hazard, but Frank Lampard and his young team have done remarkably well.

Nobody expected the Blues to finish in the top four or reach the FA Cup final this term, but they have achieved both.

Head-to-head: Chelsea are unbeaten in their previous three meetings with Arsenal in all competitions –winning two and drawing one.

Lampard’s side beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium back in December before drawing 2-2 at Stamford Bridge in January.

Team news: Arsenal will be without injured quartet Pablo Mari, Shkodran Mustafi, Calum Chambers and Gabriel Martinelli, while Hector Bellerin is also a doubt with a calf issue.

First-choice goalkeeper Bernd Leno is nearing a return to first-team action, although Arteta has confirmed that Emiliano Martinez will start between the sticks on Saturday.

Billy Gilmour is Chelsea’s only confirmed absentee, while Willian and N’Golo Kante will both be assessed before the weekend.

Both teams have enjoyed some impressive results post-lockdown, but Chelsea’s head-to-head record in this fixture gives them an edge.

Forebet predicts that Chelsea will win a low-scoring 2020 FA Cup final.
