Although this is a bottom half clash in Serie A, 13th placed Udinese occupy five league places higher than their visitors along with holding a 10-point cushion over their opponents prior to Wednesday’s encounter at the Dacia Arena.
Udinese’s situation has vastly improved in recent times thanks to an impressive 2-1 home win against Serie A league leaders and title-holders-elect, Juventus, as well as a 1-0 win on the road at Cagliari.
The hosts will no doubt be eager to post a third league win on the trot when they welcome relegation-threatened Lecce on Wednesday night.
Things haven’t all gone Udinese’s way though on home turf as the victory over Juventus ended a dismal run of seven matches without a win at the Dacia Arena, but the hosts have won the previous three encounters on the trot overall against Lecce as well as their last four meetings at home on the trot too.
With just two matches remaining of this season’s Serie A campaign, Wednesday evening’s visitors, Lecce, find themselves four points adrift of fourth from bottom Genoa and safety ahead of this ‘must-win’ clash at Udinese.
Having managed to register just two wins from their previous 12 matches, Lecce now find themselves in a desperate situation where they now must find a win from somewhere, but this could be easier said than done, especially as both of these recent wins were recorded at their Stadio Comunale Via del Mare.
A three-match winning streak at the start of February gave Lecce a brief glimmer of hope in their struggle against relegation as they racked up wins against Torino, Napoli and SPAL, but the visitors failed to sustain this momentum in subsequent matches.
Results and form away from home have also been found wanting as Lecce have really struggled for points on their travels, recording just two wins out of their last 15 matches which is an extremely poor record indeed, and they look to have their work cut out against Udinese in this match-up.
To make matters worse, Lecce have also failed to score in seven of their 18 away matches to date in this season’s Serie A campaign and their struggles to find the back of the net could haunt them again in this clash as Udinese seek a third win on the trot.
